'black as the pit from pole to pole': where has anyone seen this pit that covers the space from pole to pole? Already here we know this guy is hallucinated (perhaps also by drugs), like not only he is thinking of Egypt, Moses' time, Amen Ra and the pit, but he imagines there is a black line, which is actually a hole, going from one pole to the other of earth. 'In the fell clutch of circumstance': we concluded, upon thinking for a while, that the author was referring to the car clutch and fell would be evil or cruel. In this case, we struggle to see how a clutch from a car could be evil. Then if it is the absence of control of the car that is referred to, once more how can that be evil instead of just an event and then the consequences of the event being good or bad instead of evil or good?
