Maps and Projections
Flat Globe shows how people managed to flatten up The Globe for localization purposes and the mistakes that appear when they did that. It talks about the Mercator Projection and that is the most used projection we have nowadays, being the one used by Googlemaps: there is always some distortion with these projections, which aim at representing what is naturally in 3D as 2D, and the Mercator would have aimed at preserving angles because of navigation and the instruments they had for that in the past. The calculation of distances is then not so accurate at least sometimes, things being worse close to the poles.
Notwithstanding, we now rely on the Global Positioning System (GPS) and that means taking information from three satellites to get the three needed coordinates (latitude, longitude and altitude), what should finally return accurate distances and angles. The Mercator Projection relies on two coordinates only (latitude and longitude) but Googlemaps gives us the GPS coordinates and calculations while exhibiting an image of a 'flat earth' to us, so that its calculations are indeed accurate and we can see things in a way our mind can understand them.
